Travis Kelce gets new backup as Chiefs acquire Dallas Cowboys tight end

The Kansas City Chiefs are making moves once again, this time bolstering their tight end lineup. After acquiring edge rusher Cameron Thomas from the Cardinals, the Chiefs are now bringing in backup tight end Peyton Hendershot from the Dallas Cowboys.

NFL insider Tom Pelissero reports that the Cowboys are trading Hendershot, a third-year undrafted free agent (UDFA), to Kansas City in exchange for a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2026 draft, as confirmed by The Athletic’s Dianna Russini.

Hendershot has accumulated 15 receptions for 141 yards during his time with the Cowboys. Although the Chiefs already have one of the greatest tight ends in NFL history, Travis Kelce, on their roster, adding depth at the position is never a bad idea.

With Kelce still at the top of his game and under contract through 2025, this move provides additional support, particularly with Noah Gray entering the final year of his contract and Jody Fortson not being retained this offseason.

While Hendershot’s playing time in Dallas was limited-he logged only 165 offensive snaps last season-his potential is noteworthy. Pro Football Focus rated his pass blocking as elite, though this evaluation came from a small sample size of just nine snaps. At 25, Hendershot has shown promise in his college career at Indiana, where he posted two seasons with over 500 receiving yards, including a standout 622-yard, four-touchdown performance in 2021.

The decision to trade Hendershot comes just before the Cowboys were set to cut him, making the trade a savvy move for Dallas. As ESPN’s Todd Archer notes, the conditional pick they received is indeed better than nothing.

With Jake Ferguson and Luke Schoonmaker solidifying the tight end position for the Cowboys, there was simply no room left for Hendershot on their roster. This trade opens the door for other tight ends like John Stephens Jr. or Brevyn Spann-Ford to step up.

In summary, the Chiefs’ acquisition of Peyton Hendershot adds a layer of depth to their already strong tight end corps, while the Cowboys manage to get something in return for a player they were planning to release.
