There is hardly a club that buys as much as Chelsea FC . The Blues’ squad is growing and growing and currently comprises 41 players. Nevertheless, the transfer rumors about new signings are not abating. Fans and experts are asking themselves: how can you work with such a large squad? Head coach Enzo Maresca has an answer: not at all!
The Italian has revealed that he is only working with half of the squad. “I don’t work with 42 players. I work with 21 players,” Maresca is quoted as saying by Fabrizio Romano. “The other 15-20 players train separately. I don’t see them. It’s not as much of a mess as it looks from the outside. Not at all. They (the professionals, ed.) can even have 20-year contracts, that’s not my point. I don’t care.”
This surprising statement raises several questions. To what extent does head coach Enzo Maresca even work with the squad planners and transfer managers when he doesn’t train most of the players and has no use for them? And what happens to the 15 to 20 professionals who don’t even take part in the Blues’ team training? And who are the players discarded at Chelsea?
Questions that will probably be answered at least in part in the next few days. The transfer window is open until the end of August and it is hard to imagine that Chelsea will continue working with such a huge squad until winter.
