University of Nebraska quarterback Dylan Raiola, ranked as the second-best quarterback recruit in the 2024 class, has quickly made a name for himself on the field, racking up 423 yards and three touchdowns in his first two games. However, it’s not just his skills that are catching people’s attention.
Raiola has drawn considerable comparisons to NFL superstar Patrick Mahomes, not just for his playstyle, but for mimicking Mahomes’ look and mannerisms. From the signature hairstyle, headband, and jersey number to his off-field attire and demeanor, Raiola seems to be emulating Mahomes in every way possible.
Mahomes defends Raiola
Some fans have taken notice, questioning whether he’s crossing the line between homage and imitation. Yet, Mahomes didn’t hesitated to stand by Raiola.
“Yeah, I mean, it’s cool, honestly. I mean, I was that guy,” Mahomes said.
“I loved Alex Rodriguez, played shortstop, and would try to make plays just like him and do stuff like that, and it helped me become the athlete that I am. It’s just telling me I’m getting a little old. I think that the biggest thing is that you have these guys that are coming up and doing some of the sidearm stuff and everything like that.
“But I know Dylan, I train with them in the offseasons, great kid, a great football player, and I think he’s gonna make his own stamp on the game. And I think you’ve seen that early in his career.”
Raiola’s journey to Nebraska has been just as eventful. Initially committed to Ohio State in 2022, the young quarterback later flipped his commitment to Georgia, before ultimately choosing Nebraska in December 2023.
The move was largely influenced by family ties-his father, Dominic Raiola, was a star center for the Cornhuskers, and his uncle, Donovan Raiola, is currently on the Nebraska coaching staff.
