Oscar de la Hoya plays two-faced with Canelo Alvarez and now targets Edgar Berlanga

In 2020 Canelo and de la Hoya reached an agreement after Alvarez took legal actions

Boxing fans around the world know Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez, the 34-year-old Mexican fighter from Guadalajara. Today, he stands as the most popular figure in the sport. With 65 professional fights, Canelo has secured 61 victories39 by knockout, alongside two draws and two losses. One of those defeats came when he was just 23 years old, facing Floyd Mayweather Jr. in his prime, and the other against Dmitry Bivol, a light heavyweight-a class above the super middleweight division where Canelo typically competes. However, Canelo’s rise to fame wouldn’t have been the same without the involvement of Oscar “Golden Boy” De La Hoya.De La Hoya promoted Canelo from 2010 until 2020, when the fighter took legal action to break free from his contract with Golden Boy Promotions and DAZN, citing breach of contract and issues with fight organization.

De La Hoya Takes Aim at Edgar Berlanga

While many would expect Oscar De La Hoya to criticize or attack Canelo ahead of tomorrow’s fight at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, this time De La Hoya’s comments were directed at Canelo’s opponent, Edgar Berlanga (27). De La Hoya didn’t hold back, saying, “Good luck and enjoy your first and last pay-per-view experience.” He added that Berlanga was no match for Canelo, who would easily defeat him. It was an unusual moment to see De La Hoya speaking in favor of Alvarez, but you can judge for yourself.

De La Hoya’s comments came in response to Berlanga’s harsh words, as the Puerto Rican fighter declared, “That son of a b***h is always talking, we’ll give him a beating when we see him.” This came after Canelo himself took shots at De La Hoya, stating, “Yeah, I would’ve liked to fight him to give him a beating too, but I won’t even mention his name. He’s obsessed with me.” Following these exchanges, De La Hoya took to X (formerly Twitter), predicting that tomorrow’s fight wouldn’t even reach 100,000 PPV buys and claiming no one would pay “$90 for this snooze.”

Canelo vs Berlanga: What to Expect
Tomorrow, Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez (61-2-2) will step back into the ring, this time facing Puerto Rican fighter Edgar Berlanga (22-0-0). Canelo hasn’t won by knockout since 2021, though his last fight ended in victory over fellow Mexican Jaime Munguía at the same venue. Berlanga, undefeated in his eight-year career, is coming off a sixth-round knockout of Padraig McCrory in February this year. Fans of Canelo are hoping for a fight as action-packed and entertaining as his bout against Munguía, where punches flew and excitement ran high.
